Time management for artists whether it be finishing or starting a project is a common issue all us creatives struggle with!
Ans since in life we play many roles:
- Coworker
- Student
- Spouse
- Parent
Each role has their own set of responsibilities that make it harder to find the time to, well, create. I know for me especially, after I graduated college and fell into the “adulting world” I suddenly struggled on finding time to be creative.
Although, several studies have shown that making time for our creative activities can actually improve our work performance and relationships.
So if you’re currently juggling a busy season (seasons!) in your life and suddenly have a million “project ideas” saved on your computer then these techniques are going to be your lifesaver in ultimate time management for artists.
1. Allocating Time
You don’t have to spend hours on an activity to reap the benefits. In fact, a study by the Drexel’s College of Nursing and Health Professions found that only 45 minutes of art helps boost self confidence and the ability to finish tasks. Small things add up and by the end of the month you’ll be beaming at all you’ve accomplished in such a small amount of time!
2. Collective Creativity
Finding time to do the thing you love doesn’t have to be a solo project. In fact, sometimes creativity flows it best when in collaboration with others. This also gives you the chance to create new memories and rituals with your loved ones. Why not try out some of these creative activities:
- Wine & Painting classes
- Photography / Nature shoots
- Share / Create different creative projects
- Make music together
3. Don’t be afraid to say no
Sometimes we are so afraid of saying yes because we don’t want to miss out or be seen as unhelpful or god forbid… boring. Then the next thing you know there are 12 different meetings added to your calendar and a million different social gatherings you didn’t want to go to in the first place. Sound familiar? Showing up for others is an important trait for maintaining our relationships, but the key is learning how to balance your time out so you can show up for yourself too.
AND GUESS WHAT?
Sometimes a respectful “no” won’t be the disaster you fear.
4. Identity where you’re wasting time
” If you’re adding something new into your life, you have to take time and focus away from something else.

Did you know that the average American spends at least 5-6 hours on their phone a day? ( Not including work related use!) That’s around 30 hours a week! Now I’m all for taking time to wind down and I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with having a relaxing evening watching TV or catching up on the latest on Instagram. But too much screen time has proven to have a negative effect on our physical and mental health.
Once you identify where all your attention is going after work hours, that will help you find that free time you seek.
