What is slow style parenting?
Allow me to tell you my (very rocky) start with the slow living movement.
After hours into my wild labor, my daughter’s heart rate was lowering .
So much that I was quickly wheeled in for an emergency c-section.
Although though my labor was still positive ( thanks to a lot of hyno-birthing, + a whole lot gas & air okay!!) the following weeks post-partum were the worst…
Why?
Even though I was in a lot of pain, no sleep, & no clue what I was even doing, the hardest thing was slowing down.
Crazy right?
I actually felt guilty wanting to do more, but my body simply couldn’t.
That experience led me to wonder:
- How can we slow down in parenting when the world is constantly telling us to speed up?
After battling with that question post-partum, these are the top 3 insights I’ve gained to more live slowly and in return a more peaceful family life.
SAY no to all the extracurricular activities
Just google “things to do with kids” and an insane amount of all kinds of activities and educational devices are thrown our way.
We think to give our children the best chance looks like a wide variety of after school sports, creativity and tutoring lessons.
Yet studies reveal that a packed schedule isn’t in the best interest for optimal children mental health or for a life built on slow living principles.
Try:
Create more time for white space in your calendar and practice hygee instead
SLOW PARENTING TIP #2: Do a mini declutter
We all know our homes have the power to influence our moods.
More clutter = more things in our homes we don’t really need or value
I mean, as much as we would love to have clean picture perfect homes, this just isn’t the reality for the modern day parent.
So then, what can we do in the quest of a slower lifestyle?
Try :
- Getting rid of 3-5 items a week ( small things add up!)
- Get everything you can on subscription ( groceries, household items, etc)
- Start a toy rotation ( having a small amount of toys out on display & switching them up every couple of weeks.
- Experiment with all purpose cleaners ( diy or store bought) to reduce supply clutter
